I began designing and building lamp bases in 1995, along with a complimentary lamp shade.  Previous to this lamp design, I only made the lamp shades to go on  pre-cast brass lamp bases.  I found with this design structure, I could implement more detail into my lamp projects.  With this design, I can also illuminate the base and the shade together or separately, allowing a little more flexibility in the light output.
